M.B. Banks Ex-Mentor Dies at 86
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (UPI) - M. Beal Banks, 86, who retired in 1950 after a 25-year college coaching career, died here Monday of a heart attack.
Banks, a native of Elmira, N.Y., began his coaching career in 1909 at Centre College in Kentucky, after graduation from Syracuse University.
From Centre he went to Ohio Wesleyan in 1912, was at Ohio University from 1913 to 1917, Drake from 1918 to 1920 and the University of Tennessee from 1921 until 1926.
Former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Fred M. Vinson (edit: Centre College) and Sen. Estes Kefauver played football under Banks at Tennessee, and John W. Galbreath, owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, played baseball for Banks at Ohio U.
Banks was out of coaching from 1927 to 1940, when he became football mentor at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., where he stayed until his retirement.
He is survived by three sons, James of Akron, Ohio, Richard of Columbus, Ohio and Robert of Parkersburg.
